A page from a notebook with “DON’T GET FIRED” written in all cap letters under the date header “AUG 19 2026”

First day of school. My one and only agenda item for today. 😂

  • Notes

Note to self: next time I decide to go outside and do a photoshoot in the ruralest parts of rural Montana, bring mosquito spray! I’m still itching all over.

  • Notes

In about 5 hours, I’m going to conduct my first photoshoot. I’m taking photos of my friend’s daughter and boyfriend, two kids I’ve known for years, and I’m both nervous and excited. I told my friend I was nervous, and she said, “I am betting that you are going to be very good at this,” and if that doesn’t instill a man with confidence, I don’t know what will.

Webmentions + Bridgy

  • Notes

I’m resurrecting an old tag after almost 4 years (!!!) because I wanted to note (to myself mostly) that I’ve added webmentions to my site, as well as proper Bridgy support. I think that means that my site is genuinely IndyWebbified, something I’ve been wanting to do for years. In essence, I have a Github Action that sends any new post to Bridgy, which then publishes my posts to Mastodon and Bluesky. Once I receive any reaction from Mastodon or Bluesky, Bridgy detects it and sends a POST to my webmention endpoint, which my new Cloudflare Worker picks up, verifies, and commits back to my Github repo. Cloudflare Pages detects the new push from Github, and then rebuilds and redeploys my site back to the web. All of this is really cool, and now that it’s setup, it’s time for me to go back into hibernation…

Nah, just kidding. Life’s been busy, but this brief return to my blog has made me miss this little home of mine, and I’m hoping to do some more writing again. I’ve no idea what that means exactly, but hey, let’s find out together.

Phoebe Bridgers: Lost Weekend

  • Notes

Phoebe Bridgers dropped her new album “Lost Weekend” today, and I’m in love. I’ve had “Lost Boys” on repeat since June, and I love the acoustic version, too:

So good.

Close-up of two marigold seedlings sprouting from a flower pot with dark soil

Last week, I planted marigolds and yesterday, the first sprouts emerged. Today, I counted two more. New life is beautiful.

14 years ago today I hopped on a plane in California and moved to Montana.

I came to finish a novel, and within a year, I finished it. For a while, I told others I was only going to stay for a year. I believed it. A year turned to two turned to 10 turned to 14. I built a life here, filled countless notebooks, finished another novel and started a few more, became an IT Director, then coached football, basketball, and track, I’m now teaching two classes somehow, I fell in love, grieved, got depressed too many times, recovered, and in 3 weeks, I turn 40. I now burn candles every Friday to remember those I’ve lost, and I bought myself a nice mechanical watch to help me readjust my relationship with time. I miss San Diego, and far too many times I’ve felt like I was wasting my life here in Montana.

But I’m still here, and I’m still trying to figure it out.

2026 Middle School Basketball Newsletters

  • Notes

I started my second season of coaching middle school basketball not too long ago, and Coach Reeve, our head coach, began writing these newsletters after each one of our games. I think they’re amazing, and I thought I’d collect them all here for posterity’s sake.

My only contribution is the photos of the boys plus some technical assistance for the sexagenarian Coach Reeve 😂

Season Opener

Charlo Middle School Vikings boys basketball season preview newsletter for 2026. The headline reads ‘Viking Basketball’ with Viking logos. The article introduces head coach Jim Reeve and assistant coach Mario Villalobos and describes the team’s preparation and focus on fundamentals and defense. Below is a team photo of eleven players in navy Viking uniforms standing and kneling in a gym. A roster lists player numbers, names, and heights, including Ray Evans, Wyatt Clark, Seth Sinclair, Kaid Sinclair, Blaze Beck, Nehemiah Rangel, Coen Cahoon, James Shrider, Rhory Reynolds, Mika Smith, and Clem Cole. A feature photo on the right shows Ray Evans holding a basketball with the caption ‘Ray is Ready.’

Arlee Jamboree

Charlo Middle School Vikings boys basketball newsletter titled ‘Viking Basketball’ with the headline ‘Charlo B team splits in season opening jamboree.’ The article reports on two close games at the Arlee Jamboree, including a 15–14 loss to Arlee and a 16–15 win over Alberton, with quotes from head coach Jim Reeve and assistant coach Mario Villalobos discussing effort, defense, and improvement. It highlights player performances including Ray Evans, Kaid Sinclair, Seth Sinclair, Mika Smith, James Shrider, Rhory Reynolds, Nehemiah Rangel, Blaze Beck, Wyatt Clark, and Clem Cole. A second headline reads ‘Cahoon pours in 15 points against Warriors,’ describing Coen Cahoon’s scoring performance against Arlee. On the right is a photo of Coen Cahoon shooting a basketball in a game with the caption ‘Coen scores!’"

Home opener against Arlee

Charlo Middle School Vikings boys basketball newsletter titled ‘Viking Basketball’ with the headline ‘Warriors edge out Vikings, 17–16.’ The article recaps a close loss to Arlee and discusses scoring from Mika Smith, Wyatt Clark, Ray Evans, Rhory Reynolds, Clem Cole, and Blaze Beck, with quotes from head coach Jim Reeve and assistant coach Mario Villalobos about rebounding, defense, and fundamentals. A second headline reads ‘Clark, Cahoon combine for 25 points,’ describing a 41–31 loss to Arlee led by Wyatt Clark and Coen Cahoon, with additional commentary on team growth and effort. On the left is a photo of Wyatt Clark in a Vikings uniform jumping for a layup, with the caption ‘Wyatt Clark puts in the extra time on his layups.’ A quote box on the right reads, ‘In moments where the typical player would have panicked these boys handled tough situations with poise and control,’ attributed to Reese Cox, Charlo AD.

Home versus Mission

Graphic titled “Viking Basketball” with Viking logos at the top and a headline reading “Vikes sweep Dogs!” Below is a newspaper-style article describing two intense middle school basketball wins by the Charlo Vikings over the Bulldogs. At the bottom are two photos of players: on the left, two boys in dark jerseys labeled “Mika and Clem,” one holding a basketball while the other rides on his back; on the right, two boys in white Charlo jerseys holding basketballs, labeled “Rhory and James.” Vertical text between the photos reads “VIKINGS.”"

Hot Springs Jamboree

Viking Basketball newsletter-style graphic from Charlo Middle School, Home of the Vikings. The main headline reads “Young Vikes Too Much for Hot Springs in Jamboree.” Below is a detailed article describing Charlo’s middle school basketball team winning their opening game against Hot Springs, highlighting strong defense and scoring performances by Mika Smith, Rhory Reynolds, and Coen Cahoon. A second bold headline reads “Cole and Company Tame Tigers!” followed by an article recapping a dominant win over the St. Regis Tigers, featuring Clem Cole’s standout performance with a double-double. At the bottom, a boxed message thanks parents for providing food, drinks, and shooting shirts for the boys basketball team."
